Degrees OfferedThe MA in Literature is designed to introduce students to the methods and materials of literary research, to extend their knowledge of British and American literature and culture, and to offer training in literary theory and criticism. We require each student to take courses in Methods of Literary Research and Literary Theory. We maintain a distinction between 600-level MA seminars and 800-level Ph.D. seminars (although MA students are permitted to take Ph.D. seminars, and vice versa). And beginning with the class matriculating in Fall 2005, we require successful completion of a written comprehensive examination in English and American Literature. In these ways, our MA program is designed to provide thorough generalist training in English and American Literature that serves the interests of graduate students continuing on to the Ph.D., secondary teachers taking courses for advanced certification, and students interested in a terminal MA degree. (See Program Guidelines for more details.) The Ph.D. in Literature is designed to bring students with generalist preparation into specialized work in a significant area of British and American literary and cultural studies. Students are prepared to teach at the university level and to publish their research with reputable journals and presses. We provide our Ph.D. students with excellent teaching and research opportunities, and we strongly encourage them to publish academic articles while in program.
