Program Guidelines

Our program is in the process of instituting some significant changes that will provide our MA students with better generalist preparation and move our Ph.D. students more quickly into the specialized, original research that will lead to completion of the dissertation in a timely manner. Here are some of the highlights of our work:

• We have instituted a new required course in Literary Theory (Engl. 684) for MA students.
• We have instituted a written comprehensive examination in the MA program. The exam is based on a list of sixty-one works of English and American Literature.
• We have eliminated an oral comprehensive examination in the Ph.D. program.
• We have revised the Ph.D. specialty examination and the guidelines for dissertation proposals.
