    - New York Times Columnist  David Leonhardt to speak on Oct. 3.

On October 3, 2007, the journalism department  will welcome David
Leonhardt, an economics columnist for the New York Times.  David’s visit is co-sponsored by the  departments of Economics and Journalism.
Journalism students are welcome to attend his talk to a 307 class from  2:30-3:20  in 122  Sharp Lab.
     He will also
present a public lecture, "The Economics of Life: The Rise of Popular Social Science,"  4:00-5:30 in 131 Sharp Lab. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Bio: David Leonhardt writes a weekly economics column for The New York Times
that appears every Wednesday. A New York native, he studied applied
mathematics at Yale and did a series of journalism internships during
college, at Business Week magazine, the New Haven Register, the Boston
Globe and the Washington Post. At the Post, he worked for the city and
Maryland desks, covering crime, education and the building of two local
sports stadiums. He then worked for Business Week magazine, first in New
York and later in Chicago.
He joined the Times in 1999 as a business reporter. In 2004, David
founded an analytical sports column, called Keeping Score, which
continues to run on Sundays (though he no longer writes it). He was one
of the writers who produced the paper's 2005 series on social class in
the United States. He has also written about culture, science and travel
for the paper.
