Please note: We are in a period of transition to a new English curriculum. Students who entered UD before Fall 07 have a choice of continuing in the old curriculum or moving to the new one; students who entered UD in Fall 07 are automatically under the new curriculum. The English Department is home to faculty with a broad range of expertise, including literary studies, film studies, journalism, creative writing, professional writing, English education, and drama. We consider this disciplinary diversity a strength and hallmark of the department. It fosters productive intellectual cross-currents for students and faculty alike. The recent revision of our undergraduate curriculum allows students to range more freely across these fields, while also allowing for a deepening knowledge of a particular subject. All of our majors choose one of the following concentrations: Literary Studies, Creative Writing, Ethnic and Cultural Studies, Film, Professional Writing or Drama. Journalism has recently become a Minor. Students from all concentrations take the introductory courses (101 and 102) together, and then branch out to follow the requirements of their particular concentration. Students can also choose a major in English education (XEE) witth the goal of teaching secondary English. Most of the courses for our majors are relatively small (35 is the enrollment limit on most courses; introductory 100-level courses are limited to 22; 400-level seminars and creative writing workshops are limited to 15). This allows for engaging discussions in the classroom, for more personal writing instruction, and for familiar faculty-student relations. Beyond the classroom experience, undergraduates can participate in the intellectual life of the department through research groups, independent studies, theses, internships, and student publications. |
