TESL stands for "Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages" and the 4+1 is a new degree option for English majors. The degree allows completion of an MA in TESL in 5 years. Sophomores apply for the program, and, if accepted, begin taking graduate courses in the spring of their junior year. The program is a cooperative effort of the School of Education and the English Department, with courses in Linguistics part of the degree. The TESL degree gives someone the education and experience to teach English either within the U.S.A. in language-intensive programs or abroad in language schools.
