British Literature I Course Description (Revised 06/02)

This course will introduce major writers of earlier English literature: Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton.  Emphasis will be placed on techniques of reading (including close reading, comparative interpretations, and historical and cultural approaches), the art of storytelling, the sonnet as a poetic form, Shakespearean drama, and Miltonic epic.  Additional readings will include Everyman (the late medieval drama), Marlowe's Dr. Faustus, and lyric poetry of Wyatt, Surrey, Sidney, Wroth, Donne, and Milton.  The format of the class will be discussion with mini-lectures as needed.  Lectures will sometimes feature PowerPoint slide shows on relevant topics and videotapes that tell our stories in a different medium.  Students will be expected to attend relevant dramatic productions of the Professional Theatre Training Program (PTTP) if applicable.  This course will use a new technology called WebCT.  Students will be expected to activate their UNIX accounts and to log in frequently.  Start at http://www.udel.edu/webct/help/studentmanual.html   Course requirements include: class discussion, Friday quizzes, hourly exam, creative project, outside essay, and final examination.  The final exam will be given at the regularly- scheduled time during exam week.  Required texts: The Norton Anthology of English Literature, Vol. 1 (7th ed.); Shakespeare, Hamlet (Penguin/NAL paperback).
