Programs in English: Journalism (EJR)

Journalism Website

The English-Journalism concentration is designed to provide an introduction to the possibilities of professional work in reporting, writing, and editing for newspapers, magazines, and other publications as well as to give students basic training in various kinds of essential journalistic skills. In addition to 24 hours of "regular" English courses, the student concentrating in journalism must take at least 12 in journalism, not including internships.

The basic course, ENGL 307, gives both an overview of journalism and intensive training in the fundamentals of news writing and editing. Assignments for the professor are supplemented by laboratory work of at least three hours a week for The Review, the student newspaper. The course is supplemented by ENGL 308, Reporters' Practicum, in which the student works a second semester for The Review. Other courses include radio news writing, advanced news writing (ENGL 407), feature writing, and copy editing-layout. There is a prerequisite for these advanced courses: ENGL 307 or the equivalent. Especially well-qualified students may be nominated by the professors for internships at area publications, including the Wilmington News-Journal.
