A brief summary for 1757:
Accepts nomination by Pennsylvania Assembly to serve as agent to England, to negotiate long-standing dispute with Proprietors, February 3. Meets with Lord Loudoun, cornmander-in-chief of British forces in America, March 14-22, presenting Assembly's position favoring bill to raise taxes for military supplies. Loudoun persuades Pennsylvania Governor Denny to waive instructions of Proprietors (who refused to have their estates taxed) and pass bill. Travels to New York with son William April 4 en route to England; delayed until June 23 waiting for Loudoun to give permission to sail. While at sea, completes preface for Poor Richard for 1758, "Father Abraham's Speech" (later known as "The Way to Wealth"), the last of series of almanacs written by Franklin. Arrives in London July 26 and stays with Peter Collinson; sees Lord Granville, president of Privy Council, who alarms Franklin with his claim that King is supreme legislator of colonies. Takes lodgings on July 30 at No. 7 Craven Street with Mrs. Margaret Stevenson, widow with whom he thereafter makes his home in England. Meets with Proprietors Richard and Thomas Penn in August, giving them list of grievances. Late September to early November, ill with severe cold, headaches, and dizziness. Resumes conferences with Thomas Perin November 14.
