CORE SEQUENCE
POST-BACCALAUREATE
TEACHER CERTIFICATION
REQUIREMENTS
CONTACTS
Thank
you for your interest in the English Education program, which includes
a full major in English and additional courses leading to eligibility
to teach secondary school English. The goals and conceptual framework
of the program are described in The University of Delaware Educator.
See
the English Education Requirements for
a list of the courses in English and professional studies required
in the program. For an English Education checksheet, including group
requirements, go to Requirement
Checksheet (PDF). If you have questions about
whether a particular course you have already taken could be used
to fulfill a specific English Education requirement, please contact
one of the professors listed below.
Completing
the program will make you eligible for certification as a secondary
school English teacher in whichever state you choose. While there
are no guarantees of jobs from year to year, English Education students
have generally been successful in finding teaching positions. Students
receive job counseling and practical help as a normal part of the
program, and they have the opportunity to attend the University's
annual job fair for teachers. We also provide assistance in applying
for teacher certification at the end of the program.
For
additional information on program requirements, state competency
tests, teacher certification, and field experiences, see Teacher
Education at the University of Delaware. Applications for student
teaching may be found here.
Students are also required to pass Praxis I and Praxis II before
taking the methods courses; for information on these tests, see
www.udel.edu/teachered/praxisreq.html.
Most
of the English courses and some of the professional studies courses
are offered in the evening, and we are trying to increase the number
of evening courses. We will do everything we can to accommodate
people with full-time jobs, but the clinical experiences in the
program are necessarily keyed to the high school day, so completing
these courses entirely in the evenings is not an option. You will
also have to be free all day every day in the spring semester in
which you student teach.
It
is, of course, important for high school teachers to have a clear
and up-to-date grasp of the content field they will teach. For that
reason, college courses taken more than seven years ago do not ordinarily
apply to this program. For the same reason, students are expected
to have a grade point average of 2.75 overall and 3.0 in the major
when they apply for student teaching.

The
information on this page pertains to prospective students who already
have a B.A. and are interested in a non-degree program leading to
teacher certification in secondary school English. The University
of Delaware does not offer a graduate degree program in this area.
Please note: If your most recent degree is more than seven years
old, those courses will not count toward teacher certification.
If
you decide to pursue teacher certification, you will have to be
admitted to the University of Delaware as a non-degree candidate
for teacher certification. For an application form and information
about the admission process, see the Admissions
Office web site.
In
order to become eligible for teacher certification, you must complete
whatever required English and professional studies courses you have
not already taken. For a list of these courses, see English
Education Requirements. If you have any questions about whether
a particular course you have already taken fulfills a specific requirement,
please contact one of the professors listed
below. Students are also expected to have a 2.75 overall grade point
average and a grade point average of 3.0 in the major when they
apply for student teaching.
