The Communication Condition
Changes to the CC System
- When you file a CC with your departmental secretary, who will forward the paperwork to the Writing Center, by all means tell the student what you have done and why, and also stress to the student the importance of resolving the CC as soon as possible so that it will not prevent the student from graduating on time. In our experience, too many students misunderstand or disregard the meaning and purpose of the CC, delay getting the help they need, and sometimes even prevent themselves from graduating on time. We would like to enlist your help especially at this crucial initial step of the process.
- When you file a CC, either ask the secretary to send the student’s writing that caused you to issue the CC to the Writing Center along with our copy of the CC form or ask the student to bring the writing to the Writing Center for the first consultation.
- If you suspect that a student’s writing problems spring from the fact that English is not the student’s native language, please don’t use the CC system. Refer the student either informally or with a “Writing Center Referral” form and we’ll place the student with one of the English as a Second Language (ESL) specialists on our staff, who will work with the student as needed.
- If you suspect or if you know (because the student has told you) that a student’s writing problems spring from a Learning Disability (LD) condition, please don’t use the CC system. Give us a call and we’ll either work with the student ourselves, or we’ll refer the student to other services for LD learners on campus, or we’ll do both.
