General Information

The writing center provides free, individualized instruction on writing-related issues for all graduate students.  You may attend on a one-time basis or set up regular appointments with a consultant, with a limit two appointments per week.

The consultant can meet with you at any stage of the writing process, whether it be brainstorming, developing an organizational plan, looking at transitions, or polishing a final draft. In some cases, the consultants act as a "practice audience" for your writing as they read your paper with you and ask questions or make comments that can help you improve your writing.

As an academic unit dedicated to teaching, the writing center can’t proofread or edit or writing; our consultants will, however, provide interested feedback on the coherence and clarity of your writing and teach you to proofread and edit your own academic and professional writing.  In addition, the consultants can work with you on such issues as organization, punctuation, documentation, and ESL problems.

Thesis and Dissertation Information

Writing center consultants have considerable experience working with graduate students on their theses and dissertations and can meet with you twice a week, if you like. It’s a good idea to make appointments early in the process, well before chapter or final deadlines. That way, you’ll have time revise, edit, and proofread your work. You can make an appointment here.

Here are some suggestions that will help make your first appointment more profitable.

  • Discuss the conventions of writing in your field with your advisor, including citing references, surveying literature, and showing equations, etc.
  • Bring one or two articles from respected journals in your field.
  • Download the current Thesis Manual and become familiar with it.  (http://www.udel.edu/gradoffice/current/thesismanual.html)
  • Mark the passages in your chapter where you have specific concerns.
  • Bring a list of specific questions you have about your writing.
