The Arak Award
In the mid-1990s, University of Delaware alumni Sydney F. Arak and Ruth Toor provided funding for the Department of English to celebrate outstanding student writing. They established the on-going award fund in honor of their parents, John and Frieda Arak.
Each year, over 3000 students enroll in English 110, the required first-year writing course. Instructors of 110 from the spring and fall of each calendar year submit outstanding essays. Then each January a committee of veteran teachers of 110 reads the nominees and selects the winners. Students who win the Arak Award have their essays published in the annual Arak Anthology (published in late spring) and receive a monetary prize.
Many people talk about the state of writing among college students. The Arak Family did something positive about it. The Department of English is grateful for the family's on-going support.
