“Female Soldiers on the Front Line?”

by Melody Chandler

Essay Thesis and Organization

  • What is the impact of beginning the essay with the story?

  • Where is the thesis?  Since the thesis is not in the usual position, how does the initial story allow the author to build to the thesis?

  • Discuss the ways in which quotations and paraphrases are introduced throughout the essay.

  • On pages 34 and 35, there are several quotations.  Why did the author choose to use block quotations?

Sources

  • Look at the list of sources.  Is it a good mix?  Why is a good mix of source types important?

  • What constitutes a good web source?  How do you know that the websites in the bibliography are trustworthy?
