“Heartache, Hard Work, and Havoc: A Psychoanalysis of Victor Frankenstein”

by Leah DiMatteo

Essay Thesis and Organization

  • The essay begins with a substantial quotation.  What is the impact of beginning the essay like this?

  • Identify the thesis.  How does the author use the quotation to build up to this thesis?

  • How does the author account for an audience who may not have read the book?  Does the reader have adequate information about the novel to understand the argument?

  • Discuss the ways in which quotations and paraphrases are introduced throughout the essay.

  • On page 2, there are several citations.  How do the citations with the block quotations differ from the other citations?

  • Choose a 5-6 paragraph section of the essay and discuss the organization and transitions the author uses (hint: block quotes do not count as their own paragraph).

Sources

  • Look at the sources used.  What kind of source is each entry, and how do you know?
