“The Risks of Internet Gambling”

by Jonathan Hullman

Content:

  • How does this author effectively describe the problem of internet gambling?  How has he created a sense of urgency about the topic?  How has he made it relevant to a specific audience?

  • How does the use of first-hand personal accounts or interviews add to the arguments that this author is making?  How are these accounts organized throughout?

  • Does the author present more than one solution to curb Internet gambling addiction?  If so, is this an effective conclusion tactic?  Explain.

Sources and Technical Aspects:

  • Look at the bibliography page: What information is missing from the database citation entries?

  • In paragraph 9, the author states that a survey of University of Delaware students was conducted.  If you were to conduct your own field study and use it in your own writing, how would you cite it with in your paper and as a source on the bibliography?  What are the benefits of conducting your own study or survey?

  • Find the two block quotations in this essay.  Instead of paraphrasing, why did the author think that these particular sources were important enough to earn block quotations?  How does the author negotiate integrating block quotations into the surrounding paragraph?
