Essay Thesis and Organization

List the issues raised in the story of the author’s brother’s team. How do the author’s proposed solutions address these issues?

What is the impact of starting the essay with a review of an infamous story, then with statistics, both before stating the thesis?

Describe how the author inserts herself into the essay. Point out some passage throughout the essay in which she refers to herself. How would the essay be different without the extensive personal testimony?

Describe how the author mixes the outside sources with the story of her brother’s team and with what she had witnessed?

In a five or six paragraph sequence from deep in the essay, explain the paragraph order and chart the transitions between paragraphs.

Sources

What does the author write for the annotations of the sources?

Describe the mix of sources. Place the sources into categories: books, magazine articles, studies from journals.

On page 46, the first full paragraph has a quotation that includes a bracket. The last full paragraph on the page has a quotation that includes a parenthesis. Why does the author use a bracket in one case and parenthesis in the other?
