Ellen Pifer (B.A. English, with Distinction,University of California, Berkeley; M.A., Ph.D. Comparative Literature--English, Russian, French--University of California, Berkeley) is the author of Demon or Doll: Images of the Child in Contemporary Writing and Culture (University Press of Virginia, 2000); Saul Bellow Against the Grain (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1990) which received Choice magazine's "Outstanding Academic Book Award for 1990-91"; Nabokov and the Novel (Harvard University Press, 1980); and dozens of essays, articles, and chapters on modern and contemporary fiction. Editor of Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita: A Casebook (Oxford University Press, 2003) and of Critical Essays on John Fowles (G.K. Hall, 1986), Pifer has published a monograph on Fowles's work (DLB, 1983) and numerous essays and articles on Nabokov. She has served as President (1998-2000) and Vice-President (1996-98) of the International Vladimir Nabokov Society and is a member of the editorial board of Nabokov Studies. Pifer teachescourses on twentieth century literature and culture, focusing on the American, English, and Anglophone novel in a global context; she has lectured widely on these topics in Europe, Russia, and the United States . In 1992 she held a Fulbright Scholar's Award while teaching at the University of Lyon III, France and has held fellowships and grants from various institutions including the NEH. During the spring semester of 1993, she was Rector's Distinguished Visiting Professor in American Literature at the University of Helsinki, Finland; in 1990, she taught as Visiting Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley. Pifer has directed Study Abroadprograms in both London and Paris.
