Biography
Helena (Hee Eun) Kim is a scholar specializing in nineteenth-century American literature, with a focus on the hydro-critical reading of novels. She explores the role of seemingly insignificant objects in literary texts and how they connect female characters to the oceanic space. Helena’s work re-examines the meaning of “superfluidities” at home and their relationship with marginalized characters, revealing new insights into creating a dialogue between material culture studies and material ecocriticism. Her research interests range from environmental humanities and material culture studies to translation studies. As a whole, Helena’s research aims to situate American literature in its transnational context. She received her Ph.D. in American literature from the University of Delaware and her M.A. in English literature and B.A. in American Studies and Journalism (Communications) from Sogang University in South Korea.
