    Biography

Shailen Mishra holds a Ph.D. in English Studies from Illinois State University and M.F.A. in Creative Writing from North Carolina State University. He is the Blog Editor and Sr. Editorial Assistant of Spoon River Poetry Review, a continuously published poetry journal since 1976. As a writer, his aesthetic is shaped by authors like Franz Kafka, Gabriel García Márquez, William Faulkner, Toni Morrison, V. S. Naipaul, Arundhati Roy, Vijay Tendulkar, etc. His research interests include craft of fiction writing, creative writing pedagogy, writing process, and postcolonial theory. To the writing classroom, he wishes to bring rigorous ethical engagement on part of the students where writing is foregrounded as a problem-solving, boundary-pushing, and simultaneously contestable activity. In 2012, he received the Tom Kuster Creative Writing Award at Illinois State University.
