Biography
Susan Goodman has been a Guggenheim fellow and the recipient of grants from the NEH and Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Her seven authored books include Edith Wharton's Inner Circle, Civil Wars: American Novelists and Manners, and William Dean Howells: A Writer's Life, co-authored with Carl Dawson. Her most recent book is Republic of Words: The Atlantic Monthly and Its Writers, 1857-1925. Her current project, which follows James's itinerary in The American Scene (1907), explores narratives of American identity through a variety of settings to create a virtual dialogue among James, his contemporaries, and readers today.
